SD-WAN (Software-Defined Wide Area Network) offers businesses maximum flexibility when connecting their sites. Technology & Architecture

SD-WAN abstracts the physical underlay (Internet, DIA, LTE, fibre) and forms an overlay VPN. Control is managed centrally via an SD-WAN controller instance. Policies dynamically determine which transport path traffic is routed through, based on latency, jitter, packet loss, application recognition or security rules.

Different SLA levels apply to SD-WAN depending on the underlays used. If byon does not manage the SD-WAN, the performance metrics relate exclusively to physical connectivity.

How does SD-WAN differ from managed SD-WAN?

With SD-WAN, the customer is responsible for managing the network themselves. With Managed SD-WAN, the provider takes care of tasks such as operation, monitoring, configuration and troubleshooting. The choice depends primarily on internal resources and the preferred operating model.

What is meant by a ‘virtual overlay’?

A virtual SD-WAN overlay is a software-based network layer that is superimposed on existing data links.
It connects sites logically, controls data traffic centrally and is independent of the specific link used (e.g. fibre-optic, MPLS or mobile networks).

How does an overlay differ from an underlay?

Underlay: The physical infrastructure, i.e. the actual data lines.
SD-WAN overlay: The higher-level intelligence that determines how and via which channel data is transmitted.

The two levels are clearly distinct from one another and complement each other.

Can SD-WAN extend or replace existing networks?

Yes. SD-WAN can complement, migrate or gradually replace existing WAN infrastructures, for example when transitioning from traditional MPLS networks to internet-based connections.

Is SD-WAN (unmanaged) tied to specific providers or lines?

No. Unmanaged SD-WAN is subnet-independent and can be operated over existing internet or WAN connections. This ensures that site connectivity remains flexible and provider-neutral.
