Security for your telephone system

Session Border Controllers are pieces of hardware used within a network to control data flows between internal and external networks. Specifically, they are used to control VoIP (Voice over IP) data flows.

The SBC acts as a kind of firewall for your telephony system.

An SBC controls the routing of data and separates it into signalling, voice, and video data. This allows the benefits of IP networks to be utilised more effectively. An SBC can therefore also be used to enable Quality of Service (QoS). However, a company always needs a specialist who is capable of setting up, maintaining and supporting the SBC.

Why do you need an SBC?

Using an SBC provides an additional security feature that ensures only the communication between your internal network and the outside world (e.g., the internet) that you authorise takes place. The SBC checks incoming and outgoing connections, giving you control over the data flows entering and leaving your network.
Many companies use firewalls and various other measures to protect themselves against external attacks. However, the security of telephony – specifically SIP telephony – is often not given sufficient consideration. This is because even modern IP phones and telephone systems can be hacked, and attackers can cause enormous costs by making calls via the telephone system or leaking sensitive company data to the outside world.
